The Fate of Dr. Parnassus

After the shocking death of Heath Ledger yesterday, some fans wondered about The Dark Knight, while others were curious about Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. While the bat-flick wrapped earlier, Variety reports that there was still a lot of work ahead for the Python alum's next movie: "The $30 million indie pic wrapped the London leg of its shoot last Saturday. The production team has moved to Vancouver, Canada, where blue-screen work was due to start next week and continue until early March." (Ledger's name was a key part of the indie flick getting so much money.)So far, there has been no statement issued by the producers on the film's plans, as I imagine they're all suffering from a mixture of shock, grief, and panic. The project, which also includes the likes of Christopher Plummer, Lily Cole, and Tom Waits, focuses on "the story of an ancient traveling show which arrives in modern London with a magical mirror that can transport its audience into fantastical realms of the imagination."
Between this and the Don Quixote turmoil, I would not want to be in Gilliam's shoes.
But I do want to leave you with this sad, yet touching, quote that Variety posted from Gilliam, which he said last month during an interview: "Heath is extraordinary. He's just so good, and he's going to be a film director. He's watching everything, and he's going to be a much better director than I will ever be." (Ledger had been planning his directorial debut with The Queen's Gambit.)
UPDATE: According to US Weekly, the production was shut down.

So sad. I terribly hope they find a way to finish the film. Gilliam, and especially Ledger deserve it.

TDK wrapped in November, but I think WB has to be very careful in its approach to marketing the movie. You don't want to seem to be trading on the untimely death of one of your main stars, but you also don't want to minimize what many believe to be a great performance. Whatever work they may have already done on TV spots and print advertising will need a second look, to be sure of how it could be interpreted. My guess is to stop the viral campaign for a few months, maybe till springtime. Then use very subdued TV spots, with more Batman and less Joker. Obviously Heath's death is tragic for many more important reasons than just the movie, but it is something WB and Chris Nolan will have to examine more closely.

I just wish Hollywood and "Cinematical'" made this much fuss over a week ago when Brado Renfro Passed Away!
Between Brad and Heath we lost two (2) really good actors on there way up!
Brad Renafro had the distinction of being discovered at the age of 11 (The Client) & just really growing as an adult and as an actor making really good films. Just like Heath, Brad had just completed filming on the yet unreleased movie "The Informers"!
It will be really interesting to see both Brad's last film "The Informers", & Heath's last film "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus"!
I know the "The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus" was still in production at the time of Heath's death, so only time will tell if he was done finishing his scenes, or if there was more to go?

Poor Terry Gilliam, as if he didn't have enough trouble getting his projects completed. I do wonder if Gilliam had Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe (the gents who made Lost in La Mancha) filming behind the scenes on 'Parnassus'. That might be the only way we ever see any of this film's shot footage, similar to Don Quixote.
